Valeriana Officinalis Root Extract (Valerian Extract)
Valerian is a popular alternative to prescription medications for sleep problems because it is considered to be both safe and gentle. (1) Some studies show that it helps people fall asleep faster and feel that they have better quality sleep. (2)
Scientists believe Valerian increases the amount of a chemical called gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain. (3) GABA helps regulate nerve cells and has a calming effect on anxiety. (4)
Melatonin is a hormone secreted by the pineal gland in the brain. It helps regulate other hormones and maintains the body's circadian rhythm. The circadian rhythm is an internal 24-hour that plays a critical role in when we fall asleep and when we wake up. When it is dark, your body produces more melatonin; when it is light, the production of melatonin drops. Being exposed to bright lights in the evening or too little light during the day can disrupt the body' s normal melatonin cycles. For example, jet lag, shift work, and poor vision can disrupt melatonin cycles.
Studies suggest that melatonin supplements may help people with disrupted circadian rhythms (such as people with jet lag or those who work the night shift) and those with low melatonin levels to sleep better. A review of clinical studies suggests that melatonin supplements may help prevent jet lag.(5)
Gamma Amino Butyric Acid (GABA)
GABA, or Gamma Amino Butyric Acid, is the most abundant inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain. While GABA is an amino acid, it is classified as a neurotransmitter and helps induce relaxation and sleep. (6)

Scientists at the University of Chicago's Tang Center for Herbal Medicine Research have found that a major chemical component of green tea (EGCG) caused test subjects to lose up to 21 percent of their body weight.
Test Subjects injected with epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) derived from green tea leaves lost their appetites and consumed up to 60 percent less food after seven days of daily injections.

The study published in the March 2000 issue of Endocrinology, reports that Test Subjects injected with EGCG for just a few days experienced significant changes in the blood levels of several hormones, including leptin. "This result was significant because previous research has shown that leptin is involved in controlling the appetite," says Liao, "but the result was very unexpected."
When Liao injected normal test subjects with EGCG, their leptin levels in the bloodstream went down. This should have caused the test subjects to eat more. Instead, they ate less (11).
